Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Great hotel in a great location in Union Square. Even though the rooms are a little small, the hotel makes up for it. Large TV's, plush comfortable beds, and my favorite: large shower heads. Another thing is that there is little noise from the city. Me and my girlfriend slept with the windows open and we didn't hear any noise from Union Square, which is pretty amazing. We got a fantastic discount from hotels.com to stay here, but even without the discount, this is probably one of my favorite hotels to stay in San Francisco, and have recommended it to many people.

Excellent location: two short blocks to major shopping and end of cablecar line. Excellent restaurants nearby. Staff was both pleasant and helpful; provided recommendations on dining and shopping. Twenty minute walk to Chinatown. Room was small but nicely and newly decorated. Great bathroom and shower. Windows faced into a light court, so no view, but also, no street noise. There is no self-parking available, but valet service was prompt. $49 overnight. Hotel location is a little hard to find for someone who does not know the city due to the one-way streets, but it worth the effort.

There is a great Italian restaurant/bar attached to the hotel that has great happy hour specials. The hotel is in a great area surrounded by a lot of restaurants/bars and the cable car stop is half a block away. The only bad thing was the parking at the hotel is by valet only and it was really expensive. We didn't use our rental car except to/from the airport, so next time I'll know not to get the car and use a shuttle.

About a 10 minute walk to the heart of Chinatown, 15-20 minutes to North Beach. The room was somewhat small, but no smaller than the usual hotels in San Francisco. The decorating was superb, the bathroom was nice, large shower, plenty of space and clean (I'm picky about that)! If you haven't been to San Francisco before, it's not the cleanest city and you'll meet plenty of homeless people. (Word to the wise: SF feeds its homeless 3x a day in several locations. Don't give anyone money.) I saved about $400 by staying here over a large chain hotel nearby. No workout room but so what? Walking the hills here is workout enough. Also, take one of the shuttles to and from the airport for about $15. Lots of varied dining right nearby.

Service was excellent. I was having trouble getting wireless internet in my room, and the engineer on staff (they actually have one) troubleshooted, and then came to my room to give me cable to make sure I could always get a strong signal. Room service from the adjacent restaurant was prompt, courteous, and the food was delicious. The htoel location is stellar. The trolley line and bart are right around the corner, and in the immediate area are tons of shopping (Virgin records, indie record store, Apple, Urban Outfitters, Gap, Saks, etc.) all within steps to a few blocks of the hotel. My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Abri while we were in San Francisco to get married. From the moment we stepped through the front door, we were impressed with the overall look and feel of the hotel. It was very clean with a cool vibe that wasn't too trendy/hipster. The staff was phenomenal -- when we mentioned that we needed directions to City Hall because we were getting married there the next day, Sheila at the front desk immediately upgraded us to a very spacious corner room at no extra charge. The following day when we returned to the hotel after the ceremony, Wilmer and the rest of the staff sent up a very nice bottle of wine as a congratulations. Every time we walked past the front desk during our four-night stay, without exception, we were greeted with a smile and asked if there was anything we needed. I cannot say enough good things about the staff! Customer service is definitely well-practiced here! The room itself was great -- we were on the fourth floor in an outward-facing room. The bed was AMAZING; it might be the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in and I've done A LOT of traveling! It was quiet; the iPod dock and flat, wall-mounted TV were definite perks. The room was a great size and had plenty of room for the two of us. Apparently, the hotel was fairly recently renovated. It was a job very well done! I have absolutely no complaints about our stay at the Hotel Abri. The location was perfect -- just up from the Powell Muni/BART station and just south of Union Square and Chinatown. Staying in San Francisco's Financial District for the price is great. However, parking fees are overpriced ($49.00 PER night of stay). It is valet, but one doesn't have the option of parking his/her own car in the hotel parking, so you are forced to park somewhere overnight or pay the $49.00. The staff is courteous and helpful. There are lots of people in the streets, so I felt pretty safe, but Ellis and Powell Sts. seem very "Tenderloin" (dirty and low life). However, there's a huge hotel across the street on the Cyrill Magnin St. side of the hotel, so there are always cabs and security around. And the convenience of Union Sq and the Westfield Mall (especially for meals in the mall's excellent food court) and Market St. buses and trolleys can't be beat. As to the hotel, the worst thing about it is the smell in the lobby. Not sure what it is; possibly nearby restaurants. Also, the double-fast salsa lobby music made me feel caffeinated. I couldn't wait to get to the door or the elevator. If you want quiet, ask for a courtyard room on the fifth floor. It was very quiet on a Friday night. The room was wonderful! Compact, yes, but not too small. I wish they had more room for toiletries in the b'room (which, by the way, had a "double-flow" toilet -- very environmentally correct). I loved the glass-doored, walk-in shower. Bottom line? Comfort, quality and location, location, location!
